Knitflix 2025 turned the traditional cinema experience on its head, inviting attendees to swap popcorn for purl stitches as they watched Downton Abbey – The Grand Finale with knitting needles and crochet hooks in hand. Hosted by The Creative Fringe and sponsored by Embrace Care, this heartwarming fundraiser wasn’t just about film and fibre – it was about making a tangible difference through the Think Outside the Square (TOTS) Blanket Challenge.
And what a success it was.
Stitching for a Cause
The atmosphere was electric with generosity and joy as crafters from all walks of life gathered to support an initiative that has been wrapping the vulnerable in handmade comfort for years. With ticket proceeds directly funding TOTS logistics and material costs, every seat filled meant more blankets for those experiencing homelessness, domestic violence, or hardship across Australia.
This year alone, 1025 blankets have already been lovingly created and distributed – each one made from dozens of 20x20cm squares submitted by volunteers around the country. Knitflix helped ensure this incredible momentum continues.
Community, Connection, and Cinema
As the lights dimmed and the film began to roll, the soft clack of needles and quiet rustle of yarn brought a unique rhythm to the cinema. For two and a half hours, the room hummed with shared purpose – part creativity, part connection, and entirely heartfelt.
Attendees didn’t just walk away inspired by the Crawley family’s cinematic farewell – they also left with limited edition tote bags, jars of homemade jam, and a chance at winning raffle prizes donated by generous local businesses. More importantly, they left knowing they were part of something much bigger than themselves.
A Simple Idea with a Powerful Impact
As event organiser Debbie O’Connor of The Creative Fringe shared, “It’s about doing what you love, with people who share your passion, for a reason that matters.” That’s the real beauty of Knitflix – bringing people together not just to create, but to care.
In a time when connection often feels fleeting, Knitflix reminded us that community is alive and well – and it can grow one square, one stitch, one story at a time.
