When mother-and-daughter duo Dawn and Jean joined the TOTS Blanket Challenge this year, they didn’t just come to lend a hand—they found healing, connection, and a renewed sense of purpose.
Dawn has been a long-time friend of our founder, Debbie O’Connor. Over dinner one evening, Debbie asked how Jean was doing. Jean had recently lost her own mother, who passed away at the incredible age of 98. Jean lives with Dawn and her family, yet navigating the heavy grief and quiet shift that comes after losing someone you’ve spent so much time caring for, isn’t easy.“When someone you love needs you every day, your life has meaning and structure,” Dawn explained. “When that’s suddenly gone, you’re left wondering what to do with your time- and your heart.” Debbie, knowing Jean could knit and sew, gently suggested she join the TOTS Blanket Challenge. Crafting can be more than just a hobby – it’s proven to ease anxiety, lift depression, and bring a calming rhythm to stressful days. So, Jean came along to our very first Sewing Bee with Dawn. While Dawn sorted colourful 20x20cm squares, Jean was given the joyful task of stitching them together. Naturally, we sent her home with a few bags of squares – and Jean got to work.
Since then, she’s completed at least three beautiful blankets and has attended more sewing bees, becoming part of our wonderful community of crafters. And now? Jean’s off adventuring around the UK, visiting family with a lighter heart and a spark in her step. Dawn says it best: “It’s so lovely to see Mum happy again.”
Stories like Jean’s are why we do this. The TOTS Blanket Challenge is about more than just giving warmth to those in need. It’s about giving purpose, joy, and connection to those who make them too.
